June 4, 2009Canadian Forces Day – Celebrating those who protect usOttawa, Ontario – Canadian Forces Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of June, which falls on June 7 this year. It gives Canadians a chance to pay tribute to the members of the Canadian Forces, who contribute to peace and safety both at home and abroad. No matter where you are on June 7, you can take part in the celebrations.According to Tilly O’Neill Gordon, the MP for Miramichi, on this day it is important to highlight the hard work and sacrifices of not only the members of the Canadian Forces but also their families. “It can’t be easy for military spouses, or for their children, to see them take off for months at a time to a country at war.” Every day, members of the Canadian Forces perform their duty with courage and valour, often in the face of adversity. Their unfailing dedication and passionate commitment deserve our respect and acknowledgement. Canadian Forces Day gives you an opportunity to express your pride in the Canadian Forces. “Let’s celebrate Canadian Forces Day and honour the members of the Canadian Forces from Miramichi and around us,” said O’Neill Gordon.
Let the members of the Canadian Forces know you appreciate their service by dropping them a line on their message board at: Canada Remembers D-Day As the sun rose over the beaches of Normandy 65 years ago, Canadian Forces from land, air and sea came together on D-Day in the pursuit of freedom. By the time the sun set that day, the Canadians had progressed farther than any other Allied troops. The Canadian triumph at D-Day and the Battle of Normandy was not without sacrifice. Of the more than 90,000 Canadians who served in the Battle of Normandy, more than 5,000 would lay down their lives defending the values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law that we cherish today. Canada remembers June 6, 1944. Across Canada and at Juno Beach in France, Canadians will join together to salute our Veterans of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy whose contributions and sacrifices led to the end of the Second World War.
